This album mixes blues with Americana, topped off with superb vocals
Australian born Kara Grainger comes across as a younger version of Bonnie Raitt. She sings blues with plenty of emotion and (when required) raunchiness, and as with Ms Raitt she plays a mean guitar. The slightly jazzy blues of Dreamed I Was The Devil has some fine keyboard work from Jeff Young, and Kara’s laid-back sultry vocals are quite brilliant.
If like me you love a really good slow blues tune that makes the hairs stand up on the back of your neck, then you need to check out the truly wonderful I’m Going To Live The Life I Sing About In My Song. Apart from it being a long title it is also a very atmospheric number with Kara’s passionately charged vocals embracing the feelings of the lyrics quite magnificently. Going back to the comparison with Bonnie Raitt, not only do they sound similar vocally at times, but on tracks like the raunchy rocker Sky Is Falling, Holding On about not giving up on love, and the up-tempo soul tune On My Way which is a duet with Amos Lee, she also plays some mighty fine slide guitar.
Great album from a top-class singer/guitarist. David Knowles
