Oli Brown
HEADS I WIN TAILS YOU LOSE
Ruf Records RUF 1160
***1/2
Outrageously fine material by someone far too young to be releasing music this good.
Hailing from the UK and releasing his second album, to say Oli Brown won’t be going places would be a downright lie. Mike Vernon (who has worked with the likes of Eric Clapton and Fleetwood Mac) produced this, and with a European tour happening this spring and an appearance at Glastonbury this is one artist going places.
With a relaxed feel about it, Speechless is the finest example found on this twelve track record. It has the added bonus of including some spine chilling guitar in its mix, and is a sound which seems to impress from start to finish. Keeping My Options Open is extremely good as well. A delta blues groove which is performed beautifully, it seems to merge many other genres with this original opening sound that is very, very good to hear.
Be sure to keep a vigilant eye out for the name Oli Brown, for he and his band members are responsible for creating a stonking sound that is incredibly decent and one which will surely earn him armies of fans across the world. Russell Hill
